If you have a dial-up or other connection to the Internet that charges fees per connection, by the amount of time connected or for the amount of data downloaded, make sure your router or connection software does not automatically start a connection to support the Automatic Update feature to avoid extra connection fees. Either follow your router's instructions to edit your router settings as required, or deactivate the Automatic Update. 5. Installation ======================================================================== Installing PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 takes only a few minutes. 5.1 Installation Considerations ===================================================================== Before installing PC-cillin Internet Security 2007, take note of the following requirements: a. Before installing PC-cillin Internet Security 2007, please remove any other software protecting your computer against viruses or spyware, or else the PC-cillin Internet Security Setup program will remove those programs during installation. b. PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 supports upgrades from the 2006 version, including the migration of your license number customized Personal Firewall Profile settings. c. You cannot add or remove most PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 features after installation, apart from the Personal Firewall. 5.2 Installation Steps ===================================================================== To install PC-cillin Internet Security 2007: a. Launch the Setup program. b. Accept the license agreement. c. Submit your license number. d. Specify where you want to install PC-cillin Internet Security. e. Select which type of installation you prefer. Note: A "Minimum" installation does NOT include the Personal Firewall, Personal Wireless Network Monitor, Suspicious Software Alarm System, and Protection Against Network Viruses. You should select a "Minimum" installation only if you have already installed and enabled other firewall software to protect your computer. f. Decide if you want access to the online database services. g. Decide if you want to restart your computer when prompted. Note: You must restart your computer to make the installation changes take effect after upgrading from the previous version. 6. Post-Installation Configuration ======================================================================== To get the most out of PC-cillin Internet Security 2007, complete all three of the following tasks. a. Register PC-cillin Internet Security 2007. Note: If you install PC-cillin Internet Security but do not register online, you can download only one update. Before receiving further security updates, you must register PC-cillin Internet Security online. b. Click "Update Now" on the main console to get the latest updates. c. Click "Scan Now" to check your computer for hidden dangers. 7. Known Issues ======================================================================== The release contains the following known issues: 7.1 Personal Firewall ===================================================================== a. Enabling or Disabling the Personal Firewall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Close all programs you have running before enabling or disabling the Personal Firewall. Your computer may temporarily slow down while starting PC-cillin Internet Security 2007, Internet Explorer, or other programs immediately after you modify the Personal Firewall settings. b. Changing Your Personal Firewall Profile ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Close all programs that you have running before changing Personal Firewall profiles. Your computer may temporarily slow down while starting PC-cillin Internet Security 2007, Internet Explorer, or other programs immediately after you modify the Personal Firewall Profile settings. c. Network Control List Priorities ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The priority of a rule depends on where the rule appears on the list. The higher a rule appears on the list, the higher the priority. For example, suppose you set two rules: the first one allows traffic to pass through port 100, while the second prevents traffic from passing through port 100. In this case, traffic can pass through port 100 because the first rule ranks higher on the list. You can change the priority of rules using the arrow buttons on the Exception Rule screen. New rules appear at the bottom of the list by default. d. Illegal Characters for the Network Control List Rule "Name" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You cannot use the character "|" in the Control List rule "Description" field. e. Specifying Incoming & Outgoing Ports for Network Control List ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When creating Network Control List rules for incoming traffic, the specified port number refers to the port number on your own computer. For outgoing rules, the port number refers to the port number of the other computer. f. Shared Network Resource Settings for Personal Network Profiles ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Personal Firewall provides maximum security to protect you from attack. However, to use local area network resources (necessary to share printers or files), you must switch to the Office Network profile on the Firewall Profiles settings page. 7.2 Automatic Updates ===================================================================== a. Once you install PC-cillin Internet Security 2007, you can update your protection just once before registering the software. After downloading that first update, you must register online to get the next update. b. If required, PC-cillin Internet Security will prompt you to restart your computer to make an update take effect. If you neglect to restart the computer in this case, the update feature will download all components from the server again every thirty minutes until you restart your computer. c. Activating the Data Theft Prevention feature may shut down HTTP, instant messaging (ICQ, MSN, AIM), and SMTP ("Simple Mail Transfer Protocol") connections currently open. d. Updates start without notification if PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 has an outdated protection against viruses and receives an Outbreak Warning. To help keep your computer safe, all network connections except the one needed by the update process close during the update. Note: To avoid losing your connections in this situation, remove the mark from the "Use a secure connection" check box on the "Prepare for Virus Outbreaks" Setting. 7.3 Scheduled Scans ===================================================================== a. Scheduled Scans Disabled When You Start a Scan ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Scheduled scans do not run if you start a scan at the same time. If multiple scheduled scans conflict, PC-cillin Internet Security runs only the first scan and disables the others. b. Enabling and Disabling Scheduled Virus Scans ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can enable or disable a scheduled virus scan by marking or clearing the checkbox beside the scan on the Automatic Security Scans page. If you empty the checkbox, PC-cillin Internet Security will not run the scheduled scan. 7.4 Virus Scans ===================================================================== a. File Backups ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When configured to create backups before removing viruses from infected files, PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 saves those files in the Quarantine folder. You can delete or restore files saved in the Quarantine folder. b. Scanning All Disk Drives ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Your Protection Against Viruses, virus scans, and scheduled scans can examine local drives, but cannot check mapped network drives. A scheduled scan can inspect removable disks, such as floppy disks, USB memory sticks, and CD-ROM drives. If a drive contains no disk or data, the scan automatically skips that drive and continues to the next. c. Progress Bar Status During Scans ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The progress bar calculates the total number of files divided by the number of scanned files. At the beginning of a virus scan or during a scheduled scan, the number of files checked will nearly match the number of files counted so far. At that time, the progress bar will initially appear to reach almost 100%. As the scan progresses, however, the total number of files counted will soon greatly exceed the number of files scanned. The progress bar will then reflect the progress of the scan more accurately. d. Compressed File Cleaning ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The compressed file cleaning function can detect infections as deep as six layers of compression ("compressed six times"). PC-cillin Internet Security cannot automatically clean infected files compressed through more than two layers (for example, ZIP files compressed again using the ZIP program). e. "Skip files previously checked to speed up the scan" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Before starting to scan a file for viruses with this feature enabled, PC-cillin Internet Security checks the target file for modifications since the time of the last scan. For a very large number of files, however, enabling this feature may not greatly accelerate the scan. f. Unable to scan Windows Vista Shell or show virus properties ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 cannot run a scan of the Windows Shell or display virus properties due to operating system limitations. 7.5 Spyware Scans ===================================================================== a. When you remove suspected spyware, PC-cillin Internet Security automatically creates a backup of the file in the SpyBackup folder, except for Internet browser cookies. You can delete or restore most files from the quarantine, but not cookies. b. A spyware scan might identify harmless files as suspected spyware, and may even capture files necessary for legitimate software to function properly. Exercise caution when removing files brought to your attention, because you cannot recover such files once deleted. c. PC-cillin Internet Security may prove unable to remove some forms of spyware. In this case, check for further guidance by clicking "More Info" and following the recommendations shown. d. PC-cillin Internet Security sometimes cannot pause a scan for spyware while checking your computer's memory or registry. e. A spyware scan cannot successfully examine removable drives, such as USB memory sticks, floppy disks, or network drives. f. A scan for spyware cannot detect spyware in locked files. g. Your Protection Against Spyware is disabled when you start a scan for spyware, or when a scheduled spyware scan begins. h. The spyware log does not record spyware removal failures, so please take action whenever a warning window opens. i. The Trend Micro Encyclopedia does not contain records concerning some known forms of spyware. j. The Suspicious Software Alarm System and rootkit common module do not work on computers running the 64-bit version of Windows Vista. k. The Software History Cleaner does not work on computers running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows Vista. 7.6 Mail Monitor ===================================================================== a. If your email program requires you to choose a specific proxy type, then PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 cannot monitor your email for viruses. b. If your incoming mail server uses a port other than port 110, then PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 cannot scan incoming "Post Office Protocol 3" (POP3) mail. c. The Mail Scan does not work with the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP). d. If your email software leaves a copy of your mail on the mail server, messages previously downloaded from the server will download again after you install PC-cillin Internet Security. e. PC-cillin Internet Security does not permit the delivery of outgoing email messages with "ms-tnef" as the content type when such messages contain infected compressed file attachments, even if you have the "Upon detecting an infected file" option set to Clean. f. The Virus Scan Logs for the Mail Monitor do not recognize Japanese characters. g. The Mail Monitor cannot quarantine infected files. 7.7 Web Email Monitor ===================================================================== a. The Web Email Monitor is not compatible with Proxy Auto-Config (PAC). b. For America Online (AOL) accounts, the Web Email Monitor does not immediately go into effect upon activation. The Web Email Monitor only begins working once the AOL service refreshes, usually after a few seconds. c. PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 only checks Yahoo! Mail, MSN Hotmail and AOL Mail through compatible Web browsers listed under the System Requirements. 7.8 Web Site Filter ===================================================================== a. Web site addresses in the Approved Web Sites List take precedence over addresses in the Blocked Web Sites list. Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 treats an address that appears in both the Approved and Blocked Web Sites lists as "approved." b. The Web Site Filter feature only checks Internet traffic using the HTTP protocol. The Web Site Filter and Privacy Protection features do NOT check the following forms of Internet traffic: * HTTPS * FTP * Encrypted communication protocols, such as SSL * Hyperlinks in Microsoft Word or Excel files * Internet traffic using Proxy Auto-Config (PAC) * Transmissions through ports other than port 80 (the default HTTP port) * Transmissions using non-HTTP connections 7.9 Protection Against Spam ===================================================================== a. Spam Email Filter Default Settings ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ By default, Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 disables the Spam Email Filter. You must enable this feature yourself to get the minimum recommended settings. b. Spam Email Filter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Email addresses in the Blocked List take precedence over email addresses in the Approved List. Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 treats any address that appears in both the Approved and Blocked sender lists as "blocked." Note: The Spam Filter's "Blocked" list also applies to the Protection Against Phishing Fraud feature. However, the "Approved" list does NOT apply to the Spam Email Filter. c. Anti-Spam Tool Bar for Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security installs the Anti- Spam Tool Bar for Outlook and Outlook Express by default. An option under the Trend Micro Anti-Spam menu allows you to enable or disable the Tool Bar, but to remove the Tool Bar, you must open the PC-cillin Internet Security main console and select Internet & Email Controls > Spam Email Filter > Settings... > Deactivate the Anti-Spam Tool Bar. Note: To uninstall the Anti-Spam Tool Bar, click the Windows Start button and select Programs > Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 > Uninstall the Trend Micro Anti-Spam Toolbar. Once removed, the Tool Bar cannot be recovered without completely reinstalling PC-cillin Internet Security 2007. 7.10 Data Theft Prevention ===================================================================== a. Activating or deactivating Data Theft Prevention shuts down any open HTTP, instant messaging (Yahoo! Messenger, ICQ, MSN, America Online), SMTP ("Simple Mail Transfer Protocol"), and POP3 ("Post Office Protocol 3") connections. b. Data Theft Prevention may not take effect on newly registered private information in the following situations: * You opened an Internet browser before registering the data. * You opened the Internet browser while registering the data. In these situations, you can just close and then re-open your Internet browser to solve the problem. You can also get the same results by disconnecting from and then reconnecting to your network. c. The Data Theft Prevention only checks traffic using the HTTP, HTTP, SMTP ("Simple Mail Transfer Protocol"), and instant messaging (ICQ, MSN, AIM, Yahoo! Messenger) protocols. See additional information in item "b." under "Web Site Filter." 7.11 Protect Other Computers ===================================================================== a. The Windows Firewall blocks network communications necessary for the Protect Other Computers feature. You must reconfigure or disable the Windows Firewall before activating the Protect Other Computers feature. Note: The Home Network Protection process (PcCtlCom.exe) uses UDP 40116. b. The Protect Other Computers feature sometimes cannot find remote computers while those remote computers are running a scan for viruses or spyware. c. You can only remotely manage computers that have the same password for PC-cillin Internet Security, and that have activated the Protect Other Computers feature as well. 7.12 Personal Wireless Network Monitor ===================================================================== a. The Personal Wireless Network Monitor automatically shuts down in the following situations: * all network adapters are disabled * the network adapter has no IP address correctly assigned b. If the firewall on your computer blocks NetBIOS, then the Personal Wireless Network Monitor does not display the host name. 7.13 Microsoft Issues ===================================================================== a. Microsoft Vulnerability Check ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After completing a Microsoft Windows or Office Update, the Vulnerability Check may sometimes detect more security flaws. Visit the Microsoft Web Site for other security patches. b. Guest Account ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Windows "Guest" account does not have sufficient access privileges to configure PC-cillin Internet Security. c. Windows Defender ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To improve the performance of scans and prevent PC-cillin Internet Security and Windows Defender from taking action against the same spyware simultaneously, PC-cillin disables Windows Defender after installation. You must enable Windows Defender manually to make use of the program again. d. Update Notifications ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PC-cillin Internet Security, not the Windows Security Center, displays the "out-of-date" notification. 7.14 Other Issues ===================================================================== a. Connections Established Before Enabling PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Starting Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 shuts down any network connections established before PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 activated. b. Malformed Mail Warning ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When you enable the Spam Email Filter, Data Theft Prevention, or Mail Monitor, you may receive an email message entitled "Malformed mail warning." In this situation, PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 has detected an email message that may contain malicious contents and attached that dangerous message to this new message in the form of a text file. To prevent infection, you should only open the text file version of the original dangerous mail message. You should never save the original in your mail file or reply to the sender of the dangerous mail message. c. Pattern Files and Scan Engines ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You may download pattern file and scan engine updates for the valid duration your software license subscription. You are entirely responsible for any fees charged by an Internet Service Provider for downloads. For more information about PC-cillin Internet Security and virus protection, visit the Trend Micro Web site or the Customer Care Center. d. No Internet Connection Warning ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Even if your computer has a working Internet connection, the "No Internet Connection" warning may appear if PC-cillin Internet Security cannot successfully connect with servers supplying automatic updates or the online registration service. This problem may arise under these circumstances: * The PC-cillin Internet Security network connection differs from that of the person currently logged onto the computer. * PC-cillin Internet Security could not successfully import proxy server information from the settings defined in your installation of Internet Explorer. In this case, please configure the PC-cillin Internet Security proxy settings yourself (Other Settings > Automatic Update > Settings... > Proxy Settings tab). * The server that PC-cillin Internet Security has attempted to reach is not available, or suffered a configuration error when PC-cillin Internet Security tried to connect. In this case, please refer to the instructions given in the error message and then try again later. e. Uninstalling Removes All Logs ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Removing PC-cillin Internet Security from your computer also deletes all PC-cillin Internet Security logs. 8.
